I got the “Now, Forager!” treatment

Visiting in Austin with my pals Jason Cortlund and Julia Halperin…

Jason made the perfect scone for breakfast. With candied ginger, dawg.

My 15 year old niece Chrissy said it best: “This scone. OMIGOD.”

Jason reports that southern wheat has a more tender texture. That it’s the quality of the wheat as compared to northern wheat. That’s why we make better biscuits, y’all. (Which reminds me of the spelling debate me and Cindy Widner had regarding “y’all”. I thought it was spelled, “ya’ll” but she pointed out that it’s a contraction of “you all” therefore, is properly written as “y aspostrophe all”.)

Anyhoo, back to Jason and Julia. They are making their first feature which they have written and directed and Jason acted in, called “Now Forager”.

It’s about two Basque immigrants in America who forage for mushrooms for sale in high end restaurants. It’s more than that though. It’s a story about how to live true to oneself and one’s culture. How to be honorable in the world and how hard it is to do that and be in a romantic partnership with someone who’s also trying to do the same. When your needs diverge, what then?

It’s a world we haven’t seen on film and characters we haven’t seen. I can’t wait to see it when it’s done. They shot it in New York with John Nastase as DP and are editing it in their cute little cottage in Austin.
