Stringed instruments, winged victories and a Magnetic Fields tour coming up in the Spring. Heavenly.

Elizabeth Jackson, Sarah Stollak, Mollie Fischer, and Leah Nelson make it look easy, but it was a sweltering 97 degrees when they performed this version of Stephin Merritt’s “Absolutely Cuckoo”. They’re too tuff to ever make it look tuff.

I bet this has been all over the internet and I’ve been too Amish-ed to noticed, but I just watched every one of these videos and they made me laugh and even cry a little – they are so fun — Girltalk is incredible, the dancers are amazing and the fluid camera work and editing made me feel happy to be a New Yorker again.

Amish funeral

Today we attended the funeral of a 19 year old ex-Amish man who was part of the Nat Geo series we’re filming. The Amish sermon was delivered in German inside this barn. Our ex-Amish friends were angry that the preacher insinuated that our friend had died because he left the Amish.

He died because a deer ran in front of his car when he was going to work. Nothing more. Nothing less.

My niece Shauna and I laughed to each other all summer about our friend Ruben’s comment at a party. Someone was saying they used paprika to keep feral cats out of their yard. Ruben declared, “It would take a hell of a lot more than that to keep Brooklyn ghetto cats off my patio!”

So, smoked paprika, maybe?
